Harald H.H.W. Schmidt
Harald Schmidt, born 1959, is trained both as pharmacist and medical doctor with both board certificates. He is professor and chair of pharmacology Head of department of pharmacology & personalised medicine at Maastricht University. He currently coordinates the H2020 programme REPO-TRIAL on Systems Medicine and in silico-based drug repurposing including clinical validation, and the clinical work package in the H2020 programme FeatureCloud. He chaired the European Science Foundation COST Action on Systems Medicine. He co-founded the Maastricht Institute for Advanced Studies Institute and co-led the medical faculty’s innovation platform now in place. Before his current appointment, he worked in Australia (Monash University), Germany and USA where he founded and directed Monash University’s Centre for Vascular Health, had different chairs in pharmacology, directs a drug discovery CRO at TransMIT, and co-founded and for two years led as CEO Vasopharm GmbH, a drug discovery company now entering into phase III. His research is highly translational and focuses on disease mechanisms, target validation, drug and biomarker discovery, precision medicine via systems medicine and network pharmacology. Professor Schmidt has published 220 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, books and patents (Hirsch- index 98) and is co-editor in chief of Network and Systems Medicine. He has been awarded the Roche Molecular Biochemicals Research Prize for Cell Biology, the Phoenix Research Prize in Pharmacy, and the Pro Scientia Prize.
