Edumeet is an initiative led by Trans Reseach Group and Architectural Design Department ETSAM – UPM. The current edition of this congress is organized in collaboration with Universidad de las Américas (UDLA. Chile) and will take place in Madrid (ETSAM UPM) on November 27-28th, 2024.

Edumeet 4 Ecotopies aims to pragmatically and optimistically survey the latest academic and professional research on the relationship between architecture, ecology, and the climate crisis. Today, these challenges have become more urgent than ever: the construction and maintenance of cities account for 35% of global resource consumption and 40% of CO2 emissions, while the extractive activities that support this transformation towards a net-zero future are responsible for 15% of CO2 emissions (Zheng). Therefore, it is necessary to access research that envisions new future scenarios which can relate architecture and nature, and seek new models of architectural practice that must broaden its concerns to include more-than-human perspectives. The term ‘ecotopia’ (Weston, 1975) helps us imagine alternative futures from the standpoint of our present, filled with contradictions.

Ecotopies opens a relevant transdisciplinary conversation, bringing together different approaches to envision future alliances between architecture and the planet: Gaia hypothesis (Lovelock, Margulis, Latour), dark ecologies (Morton), urban mining and materiality (Hebel), metabolisms and architectural circularities (Kallipoliti), cosmopolitics (Stengers, Jaque), cosmotechnics (Hui), pluriverses (Escobar), perspectivism (Viveiros de Castro), new materialisms (Bennett, Parikka), material witnesses (Schuppli), biodiversity (Gissen), posthumanism, interspeciesism, and biopolitics (Braidotti, Coccia, Haraway), minor architectures (Stoner, Boano), thermodynamics (Rahm, Ábalos, García-Germán), terraforming (Bratton), ecocartographies (Ait-Touati), anti-extractivisms (Moe), reparations (Tavares), and other emerging perspectives. These approaches can help us imagine these alliances.
