The International Materials Selection Challenge is an esteemed competition promoting global cooperation among universities and student groups from across the globe, inviting students of Materials Science and Engineering to participate in an active, collaborative learning environment.

Global Expansion of the Challenge. Since its inception, the Challenge has aimed to involve universities throughout Latin America. By 2022, after establishing a network of over 80 student teams, the competition extended to Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries across Latin America. This year, in a groundbreaking third phase, we welcome participants from universities in the Americas, Africa, and Europe. The six finalist projects from Brazil, Egypt, and Spain are a testament to the diversity and quality of entries.

Presentation Guidelines. Each finalist team will have 10 minutes to present their project, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A from the jury. All presentations must be conducted in English, using previously submitted slides. After the jury’s deliberation, the top three teams will be awarded, with prizes announced at the end.

Challenge Objectives. This Challenge encourages Materials Science and Engineering students to apply their knowledge and creativity using CES EduPack (ANSYS) as an essential tool. Competitors will tackle an original case of materials selection, which may involve everyday scenarios or forensic failure analysis.

Who Can Participate? The competition is open to student groups from Europe and the Americas. Registration is free and can be completed online, where each team submits an initial proposal. Ten finalists will be selected to refine their projects and present them in the finals, held either in-person or online at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in Spain.

Registration. Initially, participation was limited to Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. With the 2022 expansion, Portugal and Brazil joined, and this year, universities from Europe and the Americas are invited to participate, with English as the official language for the international phase.

Join the International Materials Selection Challenge and showcase your skills in materials analysis and selection!
